What does each science
kit workshop cover?
Each workshop is designed to be kit
specific. The round 3 trainings assume you've attended
both round 1 and 2 and do not focus as heavily on the
actual contents of the kit.
ELEMENTARY SCIENCE KIT TRAININGS
Round 1: Initial Kit Training
This round addresses management of the materials,
introduction to the inquiry-based activities associated
with the kit and instructional and assessment strategies
that promote a positive impact on student learning.
Round 2 for Physical
Science
The round 2 kit trainings for physical science focus on
teaching and learning using the inquiry method of
instruction and how it relates to the investigations in
the specific physical science kit. Physical Science
round 2 trainings also emphasizes the learning cycle and
how it relates to the use of the kit.
Round 2 for Earth Science
Notebooking strategies is the topic of day two earth
science professional development trainings. Both how the
students develop notebooks and how the teacher can use
the notebook as a formative assessment tool are the foci
of round 2 earth science trainings.
Round 2 for Life Science
The integration of reading and science are focused in
the 2nd round of training for the Life
Science kit series. The goal is to help the teachers
devote more time exposure to the teaching of science.
Round 3: Content Training
Round 3 training focuses on the knowledge and
understanding of the words and principles related to the
kit topic that are needed by the teachers to effectively
teach the kit. Alignment to Washington State Grade Level
Expectations and assessment including WASL targets is
incorporated throughout all professional developments.
MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE KIT
TRAININGS
Round 1:
This is where you will be introduced to the first
half of the investigations of the kit.
Round 2:
The round 2 middle school trainings involve work with
the second half of the kits investigations. Depending
upon time, note booking, GLE alignment and assessment
could also be covered.
Round 3:
The 3rd workshop involves finishing any
investigations not covered in the first two trainings as
well as an in-depth discussion of what worked and what
the teachers believe should be changed for next year.
Depending on time, GLE alignment, diagnostic, formative,
summative, and performance assessment will be
discussed.
